StepsWeb Assessments

This section provides an overview of the diagnostic tests and ongoing assessment functions on StepsWeb.

Teachers can click on the detailed sections for further information about each test.  Information about ongoing assessment is below.

Ongoing Assessment - Teachers

StepsWeb continually analyses each learner's accuracy for:

  • Reading and spelling
  • Comprehension and vocabulary
  • Phonic knowledge and skills

As a teacher or tutor, you'll be able to see reports covering all of your learners under your 'Manage Classes' section.  See the 'Manage Classes' section on the Support Site (under Using StepsWeb) for detailed information on how to access this information.

Ongoing Assessment - Individual Students

Parents or teachers can get the same information for individual students.  The individual profile for each student gives the same accuracy figures for:

  • Reading and spelling
  • Comprehension and vocabulary
  • Phonic knowledge and skills

As with the class report, teachers or parents can look at any time period by using the date selector at the top right of the screen.

Diagnostic Testing

The diagnostic testing assessments are described in detail later in this Support Site section.  To summarize, there is a Spelling Test, which gives you a spelling age and places students on the right level of the Course when they first start StepsWeb.

There is also a Visual Recognition Speed Test, which measures how many milliseconds it takes the learner to visually recognise a known word.  This is an indicator of whether they are able to use the right part of the brain for reading fluency.

Detailed information about these tests is in the relevant sections below, including guidance on how to use this information.
